PR Persuasion

A public relations department is worried about the image of the company it is within. Through public relations the company can interact with mass audiences. These mass audiences can be affected by what the public relations department is portraying on behalf of the company. These public relations individuals are trying to make sure that the audience believes in the company, persuading them into trusting these large companies.

When something goes wrong within a company, such as the BP oil spill, these companies use public relations to apologize for the wrong. When the oil spill occurred BP apologized for the accident, and then put out apology videos that included footage of BP individuals cleaning up after the spill. Here public relations is used persuasively communicate the apology and efforts of BP to deal with the spill.

Through public relations communication persuasion is often seen. PR has the best interest of the company in mind, and through their mass communication the best version of the company is displayed to the audience. By displaying the company in its best form, PR is being persuasive making the audience “over trust” the company being shown. Public relations, when used effectively can be used as a persuasive tool within communication.
