What is media literacy?

I think media literacy does not only refer to the access to the media with the ability to utilize what you get from them, it also means that people can absorb information with critical eyes and able to distinguish the authenticity.

As there are loads of information in the modern society, developing media literacy is very important. With the well development of media literacy, people cannot be easily affected by the information and can take self-judgment actions, in addition, this can improve the immunity of harmful media effects. To develop media literacy education, we must start by developing good balance in receiving media information and be trained to receive information through the critical point of view. Also, people must learn to see the purpose behind the information and understand the true value of the information.

Media literacy education should be a lifelong education core curriculum, that is, from primary school to university. Media education should not focus on the editorial skills training, but should include the understanding and interpretation of media content. I really hope that media literacy education will be emphasized in Hong Kong, as I seldom hear about issues about it. It is known that media literacy education is developing in Taiwan and I think Taiwan is a role model to Hong Kong.
